Q & A with Michael Slote
Fanen Chiahemen
(Logo reporter Fanen Chiahemen sat down with Michael Slote recently. Here are some excerpts from that conversation.)

What will you miss most about being here?
Slote: A lot of good friends, mainly.

What are you looking forward to the most at the University of Miami?
Slote: It's a young department and there's a chance to do some building.

How would you like your colleagues and students to remember you?
Slote: Somebody who liked doing philosophy and who was eager to encourage others to do philosophy.

Can you think back to when you first fell in love with philosophy?
Slote: I sort of fell in love with it in high school. I read a book by Joad called A Guide to Philosophy. I had actually thought that I would go into education, rather than philosophy. But when I visited the school of education the courses just seemed so boring. So I said, "I'd better stick with philosophy!"

After 17 years hear, how does it feel to make this move?
Slote: It's very hard. But I'm really looking forward to this new opportunity. And I love Miami.

How long do you think you'll keep teaching philosophy?
Slote: As long as I can.
